You can spot some family members, a birthday cake, friends, etc. But, you can't remember how many people where there, who were they, if a certain person was present...
As a result, you construct an inaccurate memory about that event and replace the original one in your mind. The next time you'll recall that moment, you will add a person, or something else. This happens without knowing, because you couldn't be certain, for example, if your uncle was there (who was not really present) or if the party took place in the living room. Imagine changing little things each time. The final memory would be nothing like the original one.
